So you want to volunteer.
For some of us, especially nurses, when disaster strikes we want to help. We see the need, we have the skills, and we are willing to put up with hardship and donate our time, so why can't we just go? Disaster response takes training and immense coordination. Sure you may be able to get yourself to the site, but unless you are volunteering with a legitimate response agency or non-government organization, you will most likely be a burden to the response and do more harm than good. We see the need, we can't understand why more isn't done, and so we take it upon ourselves. Let's say you get your way to the response area. Where will you stay? Who will provide your security? What will you eat? Where will you get your drinking water? Who will you go to if you need medical care? Do you know the politics, language and culture of the area? If you show up unannounced and unplanned all of your needs will detract from limited supplies needed for the rescue effort. More on this later.
